GYREE logo

The GYREE logo is a small art piece I made. The company name GYREE was taken from here. The logo consists of concatenated word GYREE that is a non-word. However, if you are an EEG researcher, there is no way you miss the hidden symbol that appears in the ‘ouroboros configuration’, so to say, namely GYRE-EEG-GYRE-EEG-…, which forms a gyre (a ring). Interestingly, the origin of scalp-recorded EEG is cortical GYRI (i.e. more than a single gyrus) according to the trusty ‘Electric Field of the Brain’ by Nunez and Srinivasan (2006). When you read it aloud as GYREEGYREE-…, you see GYRE-EEG-GYRE-EEG-… in your eyes, while you utter the name of their origin at the same time. To play with it more, I decomposed the logo into movements of numerous circles that are GYRI. The decomposition principle is used in almost every aspect of EEG analysis. This logo is thus associated with multi-focal illusions that creates mesmerizing vertigo, which I hope you appreciate too.

This logo was inspired by the poem ‘The Gyre’ by William Bulter Yeats (1865-1939), which was cited in ‘Tree of green go up burning’ by Kenzaburo Oe which I read more than 20 years ago. I was happy that my old reading experience guided me to find the configuration which became my favorite. There is another, more personal reason I like this configuration. My Bachelor’s degree is in western philosophy, and I chose Friedrich Nietzsche for my graduate thesis. The logo reminds me of his mysterious concept, the eternal recurrence, which I never understood but never forgot either.
